3. Killing Fields of Choeung Ek

After we visited the Phnom Penh S-21 Prison, our tuk-tuk driver drove us to the second destination for the day – the infamous Cambodian Killing Fields. This place, located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, has become synonymous with the Khmer Rouge.

While it is difficult to decide on what to write when talking about the killing fields in Cambodia, we get our guidance from the Cambodians about how to write about the Khmer Rouge. The Cambodians are transparent and provide an unsanitized account of recent history.

They even broadcast all that occurred, hoping it won’t happen anywhere else. This guideline guides us as we describe our experience on the killing fields.

Choeung Ek is estimated to be the site of 17,000 murders, with many victims coming from nearby S-21 prisons.

It was time to visit the final resting places of many prisoners after a morning spent at S-21 Prison. [Is Cambodia good for Indians?]

We found that even in winter, heat can be a major problem. Many people said online that a long scarf or shawl is acceptable for shoulder covering.

Stephanie wrapped her shoulders in a 2’x4″ scarf, thinking this would help keep the heat at bay. We were refused entry at the gate and forced to purchase a souvenir $10 T-shirt to replace her shoulder scarf.

Other women wearing similar tank tops and scarves were allowed in. I’m not sure why we were asked to purchase an ugly white T-shirt, but we were. Stephanie put on an XL shirt, and we reluctantly entered. [Is Cambodia good for Indians?]
